Come winters and there are those who are extremely happy – there is a chill in the air, but once you bundle up in the right clothes, it’s a great time to be out. Hot soups, steaming cups of coffee and huddling around the fireplace all sound good and are often the norm of those cold winter days, but have you ever taken the time to think about what havoc these cold winds play on your hair? It would come as a surprise to you, but one of the causes of hair loss happens to be the winter season.
Why do the winters cause so much damage?
Let’s put it very simply – during the winters, the air is much drier and when it comes in contact with your skin and hair, it sucks out all the moisture. This is why your skin also becomes really dry during the winters and that is exactly what happens with your scalp too –every time you step out in the cold air, the natural moisture in your hair and scalp is stripped off. There are a lot of people who would complain that during the winters, their scalp is feeling a lot itchier and even smelly, at times. When the scalp is dry, it can lead to a series of problems, including dandruff and hair loss.
If you wanted a more scientific explanation, it would go something like this – during the winters, the hydrogen bonds in your hair become weak and that leads to breakage. This is one of the reasons why hair loss increases when the weather takes a turn towards the cold.
What can be done to tackle the hair loss?
Just because dry and frizzy hair in winter seems commonplace, does not mean that there are no methods of tackling the problem and solving it as well. If you are willing to take a few sensible steps and bring about a few changes in your regular routines, there is no reason why you should not be able to protect your hair during the winters. Here are some simple steps to prevent hair loss during the colder months:
- Don’t wash your hair with hot water – While it feels great standing under a steady stream of hot water, you might want to avoid the same for your hair. As tempting as it sounds, do not wash your hair with very hot water, because hot water can wash off the natural oils in your hair and scalp. The cold air is already taking away most of the moisture from your scalp and hair, so washing off more of the moisture with hot water would only cause further damage. And while it is easy to understand that washing your hair with cold water is tough, you can always use warm water. And in case you really want to stand under the hot shower, just cover your hair with a shower cap!
- Hydrate – Not only will you need to drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated, you will also have to take a few extra steps to keep your scalp and hair hydrated too. One of the easiest ways to hydrate your hair from within is to oil it – you can choose an oil of your choice; it could be a single oil or a blend. Before you apply the oil, you can warm the oil a little and then gently massage it into your scalp and through the length of the hair. You can leave the oil for a few hours or even overnight or you can try the hot towel method – once you have oiled your hair, wrap your hair in a towel that has been dipped in water that is hot to touch. The steam like effect it creates will help hydrate the hair and offer protection. You can also look for hydrating hair masks that you can indulge in once a week or invest in high quality leave in conditioners that will help control dry and frizzy hair in winter months.
- Reduce the shampoo, increase the conditioner – During the winter months, more than your beloved shampoo, it is your bottle of conditioner that is more your best friend. While you will need shampoo to wash off the excess oil from your hair and ensure that all the dirt and grime is gone, you will want to reduce the amount. This is because shampoos will wash off some of the natural oils from your hair too. So, every time you wash your hair, remember to use a little extra conditioner, because it will help lock in the moisture and offer some extra protection.
- Love your hair a little more – There is nothing wrong in loving your hair all through the year, but during the winters, you might want to give it a little extra. As much as possible, let your hair dry on its own post a wash, because every time you use the hair dryer, you are subjecting your locks to extreme heat. Keep the curling tools and straighteners away for as much as possible, because the high heat is sure to cause damage to the hair, which could already be slightly weakened due to the cold air. Same goes for hair styling products – most products contain chemicals, which could further the damage and lead to hair loss. The more natural you leave your hair, the better it would be for it!
- Your diet says it all – We often consider diet as associated with only how we look and our weight, but the truth is that what we put into our body will have a role to play on the entire body. One of the most common causes of hair loss in any season is a poor diet – when there are not sufficient nutrients in your diet. Include plenty of green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, eggs and water and your hair will most probably say a silent thank you! You could even talk to your doctor and ask them for any nutritional supplements that you could add to your regular routine to help strengthen and nourish hair.
If you want to avoid dry and frizzy hair in winter it is best that you pay attention to the above mentioned factors and you can be sure that your crowning glory will remain as is!
