If you are a fashion designer, there will come a time when you want to put on your first show. If you don’t have the funds to hire someone to organise it for you, or you prefer to stay in control and do everything yourself, where do you start? Here are some useful tips on the stages of organising a fashion show that will get your designs noticed.
Be Creative
Once upon a time, it was possible to set up a runway and some good lighting, and then send models walking up and down it wearing your clothing line. However, in modern times, those watching a fashion show expect a lot more; they want something that will amaze them and make your clothes stand out from everyone else’s. This expectation means that you will need to spend a good amount of time working out what the theme is going to be and how you are going to show it. It will depend in part on your budget and also on your technical skills; it is better to have a simpler show rather than try something spectacular but not quite manage to do it.
Venue
Once you have your concept in mind, you will need to find a venue that fits it. If the weather is going to be suitable, you could even have an outside fashion show in a local park, for example. However, just because you are outside that doesn’t mean that you don’t still need permission, especially if you are using technical equipment. This is why you will need to research the area you are hoping to host the show in and ensure that you have completed all the relevant permissions and risk assessments.
Invitations
Once everything is set up, you will need to invite the right people to your show. Fashion magazine editors and fashion bloggers, industry experts, buyers from important stores, even your friends and family will all need to know where to go and when. You can create invitations online and send them out, but make sure you do so with plenty of time to spare as many of these people are extremely busy and might already be booked up for months in advance. When they arrive, ensure they know what you are doing by giving them a program for the show. You can find out how to make a pamphlet online and really save on cost too.
Models
How many models will you need for your show? What should they look like? What will you want them to do? These are all useful questions to ask yourself before you hire the models that are going to promote your clothing and your fashion business in general. Getting the right models is essential to having a successful fashion show, and you will need to talk to them before the show itself as well. Even if they are truly experienced, every designer is different, and you should let them know what it is you want them to do and how you want them to do it.
