Fashion Scrutiny – Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s  12 Years at Cannes Film Festival

We are a nation of movie lovers and I am no exception. I might even have some ‘filmy’ traits in me, which my husband can attest to. 😉 Generally, I love all genre of movies, but the ‘comeback’ ones are my favorites. I am just a sucker for all the drama associated with an underdog (re)claiming the world. One such recent comeback has been our in-house beauty queen – Mrs. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Entire India drooled over her recent appearance at Cannes 2014. We at BFF decided to explore this ‘comeback’ diva, and may be even fish for a life lesson for all of us. (Yup, along with being filmy, I can also be philosophical) 😉

Aishwarya Rai started her association with Cannes Film Festival in 2002 with the premiere of her movie – Devdas. She looked a little too blingy for my taste with that heavy jewelry. However, that can be overlooked if you were to co-relate her appearance with the showcasing of her movie. Probably, the entire look was in sync with her look in the movie. Ok, can be passed.

Now the fun starts in 2003. Can somebody tell me what happened here?? The Neeta Lulla parrot-green saree, bulging choli and garish makeup is probably her worst look till date. It just did not stop there. She followed it up with an equally ridiculous frilly skirt and a cape-like thing in her next two outfits. SOS please!!!

Sorry I said too soon that Cannes 2003 was her worst outfit till date. This revealing gown at Cannes 2004 took the things downhill. I am aghast at this outfit, again by Neeta Lulla. But, thankfully, her makeup is better than last year’s fiasco.

And she is back to rescue herself! Aishwarya Rai, finally, had some sense to dump Neeta Lulla and turn to international designers for Cannes Film Festival 2005. She looked a picture in beauty in the black Gucci gown and Giorgio Armani printed dress.

The brilliant spell continued in the first two outfits at Cannes in 2006. The Elie Saab navy blue gown spellbound everybody. But, the ruffled dress spoiled the party. Who likes so much ruffles anyway??

She attended Cannes 2007 as Mrs. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Along with her husband, she sparkled in the white gown. I love her outfit, but somehow don’t like the frosty eye shadow. May be its just me!

A bigger repeat of 2005. She dazzled everybody in all the outfits she wore at different occasions at Cannes 2008. I am so in love with her black dress and equally sultry makeup. This is the stuff Miss World(s) are made of. 🙂

Thankfully, the trend continued in 2009 as well. She wore a Roberto Cavalli strapless gown and Elie Saab grey one-shoulder gown. The makeup and the hair were so on mark.

Cannes 2010 was a mixed year. The black Armani Prive gown was the star of all the outfits. She looked stunning in the Sabyasachi saree. But I am not very impressed with her lilac Elie Saab gown. Or may be its her ‘skyscraper’ bouffant. Whichever it is, the entire look is not very flattering.

She continued to impress in Armani Prive strapless gown and Elie Saab one-shoulder gown at Cannes 2011.

Aishwarya Rai attended Cannes 2012 post pregnancy. She was already being judged for her weight gain. Where the grey Elie Saab gown and the Roberto Cavalli kaftan dress totally did justice to her look, the Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla saree got her bashed by the critics.

By Cannes 2013, she had lost lot of weight. Critics applauded her for choice of teal Gucci gown, Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla anarkali and the grey Elie Saab gown. However, she was not able to stand her ground in sarees.

Next came 2014. We all remember the magic vividly. The Diva was back with a BANG. She sizzled in both the Roberto Cavalli gowns. Hope the trend continues in 2015. We are so waiting!!! So ladies, the life lesson is – Everyday is a new day. All the past (fashion) mistakes are forgiven and forgotten.  😉 Cya next time!!!
