As a species capable of making intelligent and conscious decisions, humans are in a position of instigating actions that benefit the greater good—and that includes the environment. Undeniably, humankind has made decisions and participated in activities that counteract the preservation of Earth’s natural resources.

Instead of planting more trees, recycling, and favouring compostable packaging, some corporations are guilty of causing pollution, depleting natural habitats, and producing a mountain of non-biodegradable and toxic waste materials.

That said, of the three nature-friendly activities mentioned, recycling and using compostable packaging are the easiest to include in people’s daily lifestyles. It is also something that big and small businesses can incorporate into their production procedures.

Tree planting activities can only be held during specific times of the year due to seasonal changes in the surroundings and changing weather conditions. Compostable materials and recycling go hand-in-hand. When practised regularly, it spurs several benefits, which include the following:

1. It aids in waste management

Various countries in the world are struggling with where and how to dispose of millions of accumulated wastes. A huge chunk of this waste is composed of non-biodegradable plastics. On the other hand, compostable packaging and storage effectively reduce the amount of harmful materials that businesses and consumers dispose of daily.

2. It is suitable for long-term use

Eco-bags can be used multiple times without causing any potential health risk or significant damage to the environment. It can even be reused as a container or a cloth pot for indoor plants and crops. The more people use cloth bags, the less need there will be for producing plastic containers and bags in grocery stores.

3. It supports renewable energy

You need an enormous amount of energy to produce a single plastic. It is an imbalanced and impractical exchange. In contrast, materials with renewable energy do not exhaust the natural resources of the earth and instead promote the use of organic and non-toxic materials.

4. It aids in customer acquisition and retention for businesses

The younger generations are highly concerned about the environment. They support innovations and alternatives to activities that cause the depletion of forestation and the increase of pollution in the environment. Businesses that support Green movements—or practices that uphold reducing, reusing, and recycling are deemed as credible and responsible brands that are worth supporting and looking up to.

5. It does not block waterways,  nor does it destroy natural habitats

A huge chunk of plastic cups and containers get thrown out at sea. As a result, unsuspecting sea creatures either get trapped or unknowingly devour these waste products. Meanwhile, because organic packaging is reusable, it does not get disposed and thus helps save more lives in the process.

6. It promotes better health for everyone

Due to the absence of toxins and pollutants used in reproducing compostable packaging, it is safe to use even for people with underlying health conditions and allergies. In some areas, people burn their trash to limit the amount of waste they collect. What they do not realize is some of these waste products contain plastic and petroleum that can be harmful to one’s well-being and safety.

People who care for the environment will jump at any opportunity—big or small—to contribute to saving Mother Earth. Whether it’s to spread awareness on social media, limit the use of a specific type of non-biodegradable material, or to exchange plastic bags with compostable packaging, they will willingly participate if it means saving the world one packing at a time.
