Many studies have shown that physically attractive people are perceived more positively by others. They may be seen as more social, more dominant, healthier and more intelligent than others who are less attractive, and all that positive attention offers advantages not just professionally and personally. It can also offer a big boost to their self-esteem. While in the past, most people had to live with the face and body they were born with, today, we have other options.

Body dissatisfaction is a major factor for those who choose cosmetic surgery. If you are not happy with your body or face, cosmetic surgery offers the promise of reshaping, sculpting and transforming the perceived flaw so that your outer appearance can reflect your inner ideal.

Is the promise really living up to the hype?

The Popularity of Cosmetic Surgery

Australians spend about a billion dollars annually on cosmetic treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers and surgery. Some of the most popular procedures include:

  • Injectables such as Botox and Dysport
  • Dermal fillers for lips or liquid facelifts
  • Breast augmentations
  • Breast lifts
  • Breast reductions
  • Abdominoplasties
  • Breast Augmentatio, or nose jobs
  • Labiaplasties
  • Liposuctions
  • Brazilian butt lifts
  • Mommy Makeovers

These procedures do more than make a person look good. For all that money being spent, people want a little more return on their investment. They want confidence, too, and they are increasingly looking for the right plastic surgeon Sydney to find it.

When you are unhappy with sagging, wrinkled skin or bulging thighs that stay large no matter how many lunges you do, it can affect how you feel about yourself. Cosmetic surgery enables you to change the things you dislike and fix those small flaws. Whether you want a Sydney breast reduction or a Brazilian butt lift, your new body could be closer than you think.

Going under the knife no longer carries the stigma it once did, which is one of the reasons so many Australians are turning to cosmetic surgery. They can erase their flaws and focus on feeling good about themselves once again

Cosmetic Surgery and Body Image

According to a study performed by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, nearly nine out of 10 patients who underwent cosmetic surgery are happy with their physical results and enjoy better body image in work and social situations.

Most people are not striving for magazine-perfect beauty. Instead, they seek to be the best version of themselves that they can be. This is a realistic goal and one that is likely to be achievable through cosmetic surgery. Those who strive for a flawless appearance or who are trying to change their face into something it isn’t are less likely to be satisfied with their results and can suffer a drop in self-confidence after surgery. Surgery with health benefits, such as Sydney breast reduction, can also offer greater boosts in patient satisfaction, self-esteem and quality of life.

Another study revealed similar results. This study, which was performed by the University of Basel and Ruhr University, compared more than 500 first-time cosmetic surgery patients with 1,000 people who had never had or wanted cosmetic surgery and more than 260 patients who had considered but decided against cosmetic surgery.

Just over a tenth of the surgery patients expected the surgery to completely transform their bodies, faces or lives, and those patients were more likely to suffer negative mental outcomes. On the other hand, the men and women who had cosmetic surgery and realistic expectations enjoyed better self-esteem, better body image and greater satisfaction with life compared to those who did not have surgery. The researchers noted that the latter group also had no adverse effects

Choosing Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal decision. Talking to an experienced plastic surgeon Sydney should be your first step. A skilled surgeon can help you explore your options and explain your alternatives. For the best results, you should be in good health. Certain health problems increase the risk of complications and post-surgical infection, which can affect your ultimate satisfaction. You also need to have reasonable expectations. Cosmetic surgery will not fix your life or change you into someone or something you are not. However, you can use it with diet and exercise to change your body in beautiful ways or to transform your face into a refreshed, rejuvenated version of yourself.
